Last word first: Edinburgh International Film Festival
2009 closed with
RUNNING IN TRAFFIC's BRYAN LARKIN
receiving his EIFF TRAILBLAZER 2009 award from Sir Sean Connery. It's
a tangible acknowledgement for Bryan's multiple roles with Dabhand Films. Co-starring Anna Kerth, ANNE DOWNIE and Kenneth Cranham, the debut feature
caught universally fine reviews for its performances – 'one of the real talent
spotting find . . .
stand-out performance from Bryan Larkin . . . uncanny ability' (Sunday
Herald) ~ Meanwhile WASTED starring NEIL LEIPER and
KATE DICKIE, David Hayman and Emma Hartley Miller premiered
with 'outstandingly credible improvised perfs,
fluid handheld lensing and assured helming . . . the
thesps so inhabit their smack-ravaged personas that even the better known
actors, such as Dickie and Hayman, are nearly unrecognizable. Dialogue sounds
so naturalistic, the pic could almost pass for a documentary' (Variety). Away from the
red carpet, the David Puttnam keynote address and his remarks at the Skillset
/ Scottish Screen brunch were a highlight of the festival, encouraging all of
us working in the independent film sector in Scotland to continue producing
and facilitating new work with new talent as 'the creative media industries
